ChatGPT Ads have entered India, and this is more significant than simply adding another platform to the digital advertising mix. OpenAI is effectively bringing advertising into a place where users are already researching, comparing and making decisions through conversation.
OpenAI began testing ads in the US earlier this year and has now expanded the program internationally, including India. The platform says ChatGPT Ads has already reached more than 40 countries and achieved a $1 billion annualized revenue run rate in less than 200 days.
The interesting part isn't simply where the ad appears, but when it appears.
Google advertising is largely built around a search query. Social advertising is heavily driven by audience signals, interests and behaviour. ChatGPT operates in a conversational environment where a user may spend several messages explaining a problem before reaching a decision.
That creates a different advertising signal: contextual intent.
For example, someone asking about improving their company's organic traffic is different from someone asking which SEO agency they should hire. A conversation can reveal that progression naturally.
OpenAI says its advertising system uses signals such as conversation context and intent to make ads more relevant, while keeping advertisements clearly separated from ChatGPT's answers. Advertisers also do not receive access to users' conversations.
For the advertising industry, ChatGPT could introduce a new layer between discovery and conversion.
Today, a typical journey might be:
Search → Website → Comparison → Conversion
With AI, it could increasingly become:
Question → Conversation → Recommendation → Conversion
That doesn't mean Google, SEO or social media will disappear. Instead, marketers may have another environment in which brand discovery happens.
This is particularly interesting for digital marketing agencies in India, because it could eventually influence how brands approach paid media, content strategy, SEO and AI search marketing.
There is also a larger implication for search.
If users increasingly ask AI for recommendations rather than searching through multiple websites, simply ranking well may not be enough. Brands may need to think about whether they are understood and represented accurately by AI systems.
That is where Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) and Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) become increasingly relevant.
The objective moves from only winning a search ranking to becoming a credible source within an AI-generated answer.
The real test for ChatGPT Ads will be user behaviour.
Will people accept advertising inside an AI conversation? Will advertisers see meaningful conversions? How will attribution work? Will brands compete for conversational intent in the same way they currently compete for high-value search keywords?
Those answers will determine whether ChatGPT becomes simply another advertising channel or something much bigger.
For the digital marketing company in India, this is therefore a development worth watching closely. Not because traditional marketing is suddenly obsolete, but because the interface through which consumers discover information is changing again.
Search gave us keywords. Social gave us audiences. AI may give advertising something even more valuable: context.
